Dear mind,
I understand your need to take a break every now and then, But NO! not when I’m feeling creative! Do you get that we’re busy? That we have people waiting on us to publish the next amazing chapter after leaving them on a cliffhanger? Don’t you get it? We have responsibilities, real ones and I am not particularly excited about your shenanigans!
I do not understand your obsession to take a break when I have an important story to complete, neither do I find it amusing that you disappear and leave me hanging in the middle of an important work!. So I sought after what condition this might be, what irksome illness has befallen me. Lo and behold!, they term it A WRITER’S BLOCK. Such fancy name for such a horrendous condition. ugh!
I stayed up all night, investigating into this new condition I seem to suffer from, turns out, there’s a whole bunch of articles on this rather unfortunate condition.
WHAT THEN IS A WRITER’S BLOCK?
“It is a non-medical condition,…” funny how it seems more medical than non-medical “…primarily associated with writing, in which an author is either unable to produce new work or experience a creative slowdown.”-Wikipedia.
Now, how interesting right? You have cost me to lose more stories than my forgetfulness to save a story has ever cost me. The first time you pulled this stunt was when I was writing HALIYA which I never got to finish, then FROSTY ….that one pissed me off. You keep interfering in my business and shutting down my creative bubble. NOT COOL. I get that the lack of inspiration, depression and anxiety, PTSD, illness, financial pressure and a sense of failure are contributing factors to this condition.
I tried reasoning with you, gave you leisurely breaks and allowed you to indulge in your reels and frequent trips down the memory lane. Was with you each step of the way when you seemed tired and worn out. But you have taken it all for granted, deciding to plaque me with this talent-killing condition.
Turns out, about 90% of writers suffer from this condition and only about 60% are able to overcome it and complete their works. Hmm.
HOW TO CURE WRITER’S BLOCK?
- Get a writing plan: strategizing and creating a framework for all my works. A great foundation is sure to have me on adrenaline rush to last an entire year.
- Write everyday : Even if I don’t feel like it, even if I’d rather cocoon up in a blanket with a bucket of ice cream and Netflix to top it all. ALWAYS find time to write everyday no matter how small the content.
- Figure out what is stemming the block : A great way of dealing with this condition is by figuring out what is bringing it about. That way, I get to solve it in ways I feel will do the trick and be on my merry way to writing an award-winning or just for fun stories that will impress my readers.
- Take a break every now and then : See, I still have your interest at heart, so I’ll allow you a break regularly so that you can be well relaxed and ready for our next big thing.
- Set a deadline : Yep, definitely. Deadlines are great source of motivation for completing tasks. And I get to work with a sense of professional urgency.
- Stay informed by reading lots of books : What way to write better books than being in a regular encounter with them? Read books and when I’m done reading those in my library, I’ll read more.
- Eat heathy and exercise : A healthy meal is medicine to the body, and exercise, to the mind. Get ready for some skipping, planks and squats!
- Use different writing methods : Trying different ways of writing is a fantastic way that’s sure to keep me invested in my work. It’s fun and easy even if it seems hard from a distance. Change can be scary, but when embraced, change can be uplifting.
That addressed, I hope you endeavor to be a better help and companion to me and assist me to accomplish my writing goals. I look forward to your unwavering support and co-operation as we progress.
Your biggest book lover,
Tiana Diaga.
